WI - Bungay Walk November 2018

St Mary's Church is a redundant Anglican church in the town of Bungay, Suffolk, England. The church and the ruins of the adjacent priory are recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building,[1] and are under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.[2] The church stands in the centre of the town on St Mary's Street, the A144 road.[2][3] St Mary's was built as the church to a Benedictine priory. This was established in the late 12th century, but the main part of the present church dates from the 14th–15th century. The Domesday Survey records a church dedicated to the Holy Cross in the town, and it is thought that St Mary's stands on the site of an earlier Saxon church. The priory was closed in 1536 as a result of the dissolution of the monasteries, St Mary's became a parish church, and a grammar school was established in one of the priory's chapels.[4] In 1577 the church was struck by lightning, and this event led to the Legend of the Black Dog (see below).[5][6] The church was damaged in a great fire in the town in 1688. The roof of the south aisle and some of the fittings, including benches and possibly the pulpit, were burnt, but the roof of the nave was not damaged.[7] The south aisle was re-roofed in 1699, and the church re-opened in 1701.[1] In 1879 the tower was repaired, and the rest of the church was restored, at a cost of £3,000 (equivalent to £280,000 in 2016).[8][9] During the 20th century the size of the congregation declined and the church was declared redundant.[4]  Its beneficehas been united with that of Holy Trinity Church.[10] A society, The Friends of St Mary's, cleans the church and organises concerts and other events in the church.[4] Bungay, Holy Trinity Church History, tourist information, and nearby accommodation HERITAGE RATING:    HERITAGE HIGHLIGHTS:   16th-century Throckmorton brass Bungay, Holy Trinity Church More Photos Holy Trinity church is the oldest building in the historic town of Bungay. The attractive round tower of Holy Trinity (or, to give the church its proper title, Holy Trinity with St Mary's) dates to the late Saxon period. It is built of local flint and rubble, with the traditional herringbone masonry so common in late Saxon buildings.  If you examine the exterior of the tower you can see other signs of Saxon building techniques, including round-headed and circular window openings. The two larger windows on the west side were added in the 15th century (top) and 19th century (bottom), while the parapet top was a 15th-century addition. The parapet crenellations are decorated with heraldic shields of local families including the Montacutes, Beauchamps, Brotherons, and Despencers. The west and north walls of the church were built at the same time as the tower. There is a blocked Saxon slit window in the north wall, but the south aisle is 14th century. As you pass into the south porch note the plate by the door. It says 'Here was the fire stayed 1688', a reference to the terrible fire that destroyed much of Bungay. The fire caused damage to the door but did not damage the interior of the church. You will notice that the caved head beside the doorway arch is discoloured due to the heat of the fire. The door itself still has its original medieval lock. There are several features worth noting in the interior, including an early 18th-century gallery, now holding the organ. The pulpit is very nice Elizabethan woodwork, crafted in 1588 at a cost of 10 shillings, according to the church records. well worth the money, I'd say! The font is a rather peculiar neoclassical affair, similar to the one in the redundant church of St Mary's over the road. Probably the most interesting bit of the interior are the monuments. On the north wall is one to Matthias Kerrison, who purchased the Bungay Navigation in 1783 and became a wealthy merchant during the Napoleonic Wars. Set on a pillar in the south aisle is a memorial brass to Lionel Throckmorton, who founded a grammar school here in 1580. The school is still in existence as the local High School, and still uses the Throckmorton coat of arms as its badge. Even more interesting is the brass to Margaret Dalenger, who served as the prioress of the Bungay nunnery from 1465 to 1497. Sent from my iPad Very nice! So cute! Love it! ReplyForward

The NFWI Board of Trustees has set the membership subscription for 2019 at £42.00. The WI share will increase by 50p, the federation share by 50p and there will be no increase to the NFWI share.   

The distribution of the 2019 subscription will be:

Pro-rata subscription for new members in their first year

New members joining the WI in 2019 for the first time, or who have not previously been a member of any WI in the past 10 years, will pay a pro-rata subscription depending on the quarter in which they join. The rate per quarter and the distribution are shown in the following table.

Death of Maureen Rogers. June 2018.

Poringland WI announces with great sadness,  the death of member Maureen Rogers. 🌹  Maureen had been a member since 2001.  

She was a great friend and member and will be greatly missed by everyone.

The WI - all Jam and Jerusalem??  Not anymore, but was it ever?  That is just afacile media phrase.  This year is the centenary of women getting the vote after many years of campaigning by Suffragettes and Suffragists.  Many of these redoubtable ladies, once they had won the vote, started new Wis in order to carry on campaigning on issues that concerned them.  That is why many WIs are now celebrating their Centenaries, and we are still a campaigning organisation.  Last year our theme was combating loneliness, this year at the National AGM in Cardiff, we are debating on Mental Health issues.

If you are new to the village, are lonely, don’t know anyone, want to make new friends, why not come along to the WI?  We are a friendly and supportive group.  As well as the campaigns, at a local level we provide friendship and activities to suit all tastes.  Our many activities include coffee mornings, playing darts and 10 pin bowling, attending a gym, singing for fun, scrabble days, walking, theatre trips, outings etc, all on top of our monthly meetings where the speakers cover a wide range of topics.

In April, the speaker from Peter Beales Roses told us about rose growing with lovely pictures and bargain samples.  In June we have a demonstration of 3D fabric flowers, and in July the topic will be local geography with a river trip from Bungay.

As usual, we have a busy year ahead, if you would like to join us, then why not come along to the Community Centre on the second Wednesday at 7.30pm.  Details of our meetings are posted in the entrance hall, to be found on our blog, or if you need help to get to the meeting, please phone the President on 491674, or Secretary on 492155.

Tour of Rosary Cemetery. 2018.

On a nice sunny May afternoon several members of the WI enjoyed a talk and tour of the Rosary Cemetery given by Mr Nick Williams.

The Rosary Cemetery was the first non-denominational burial ground in the United Kingdom. Its entrance lies on Rosary Road in Norwich, Norfolk.

The cemetery was established in 1819 by Thomas Drummond, a non-conformist minister.^[1]The land was formerly in use as a market garden, and presents a broad green open space between the housing areas to the south and the playing fields of the Telegraph Lane schools to the north. The 13 acres (53,000 m²) of the cemetery came under the control of the Norwich Corporation in 1954 and it is estimated that about 18,500 people have been buried there since 1821. It was announced in January 2010 that the cemetery had been granted Grade II* listed status.

The entertainment at the above meeting held at Poringland Community Centre was Martin Shults who performed well known songs the musicals ranging from ‘Oh what a beautiful morning’ from Oklahoma, ‘The street where you live’ from My Fair Lady to ‘Bring Him Home’ from Les Miserables; he also amused us with tales about people he had worked with including Andrew Lloyd Webber and Michael Ball.  He was thanked by a member from Thurlton WI.

We had fun with the competition: two members from Poringland and Ditchingham respectively had dressed as characters from the musicals: Pam Lack  as Miss Hannigan from Annie and Zelia Dickinson  as Millie from Thoroughly Modern Millie. Martin judged Pam as the winner with Zelia  as the runner up.

We continue to be an active WI, as well as our normal monthly meetings, we have regular scrabble days and coffee mornings in the Royal Oak; we also have teams taking part in the County Darts and 10 Pin Bowling leagues.  The bowling team did well to get through to the semi final, we are not so good at the darts but all our activities involve plenty of fun, friendship and laughter.  We have a group who attend the gym each week and another who enjoy singalong sessions in a member’s home.  We also have various outings planned, including a visit the Harnser wood at Elsing, which was planted by WI members in 2000.  This will be a walk around the wood, followed by lunch in the local pub.

We also entered the Federation annual craft competition, this year entitled Gilbert and Sullivan.  We chose to depict the Mikado, and 5 members produced some lovely items of craft/cookery/floral arrangement/painting to set the scene.  We were pleased to come seventh out of the 14 entries.

At our April meeting, we heard from Simon White of Beales roses, he showed slides of climbing and rambling roses, and had a selection of roses etc at discount prices.  As May is our Birthday month we are joined by partners and friends for dinner at the Feathers.  At the end of April we hosted the group meeting, with 8 other WIs joining us to hear Martin Shults sing songs from the Musicals.  Martin has appeared on the London stage in named parts from musicals like the Phantom and Les Mis, he also sings locally with the Upper Octave.  The evening was very enjoyable, with members humming along and tapping feet.

Our June meeting will be a demonstration of 3D Fabric flowers by Georgette Vale.  Before then, 2 members will once again attend the National AGM, this year to be held in Cardiff.  The resolution for debate this year is on Mental Health matters, and the speakers will be Dame Stella Rimington, former head of MI5 and Huw Edwards, news reporter and journalist.

Poringland WI announces with great sadness,  the death of member Shirley Shackshaft 🌹. Shirley had been a member since 1968 and over the years had been President, Treasurer and Secretary many times.
