Poringland WI Newsletter September 2022

It is with sorrow and sadness that we heard of the death of    Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.   We were proud that she was member of a Norfolk WI and will begin our meeting tonight with a minute’s silence in her memory.

Dear All,

Thanks to everyone who came along to the garden party, it is a pity that was the one day in August when it rained!  I think we mostly managed to stay dry, although the magazines got a bit soggy!  Well done for raising £76 for funds.

A few of us met up the following week, when the weather had returned to warm and dry, some of us went for a walk around the new estate and the wood followed by coffee at the Community Centre, some just enjoyed coffee and a chat.

Local Events

Walk Tuesday 20 September meet at the green in the centre of Pulham Market at 11 am. Shorter or longer walk arranged.  Non walkers welcome to join us for lunch at 1pm at Goodies Farm shop/cafe, Wood lane, off the A140 south of Long Stratton.  Please let Lesley know if you will be coming so I can advise them of numbers for lunch, or if you would like to join us, but need a lift either for the walk or lunch.

The next Tea/coffee pm is on Wednesday 28 September 2pm at the Octagon Barn on the Norwich road opposite the Barracks.  About 11 of us met up in August, all welcome.

Our darts team won our first away match, but unfortunately lost all the rest, so we will not be taking part in the final at Hethersett.

New bowling session at Namco – 10am Friday 23rd September.

I am planning another pottery painting session possibly in November, and will circulate a board at the meeting, but if anyone misses that, contact me (Lesley) for more information.

How about taking afternoon tea at the Nook?  Tuesday’s once per fortnight, next date is 11th October.

National Annual Meeting 2023. I have received a letter from Federation to say that due to alterations made by National, Norfolk will sadly not be putting on a coach to go to the AGM next year.  Among other things, NFWI have reduced the delegate numbers so instead of visiting 4 WIs, one delegate will be expected to represent 8 WIs, and we will not be told how many observer tickets we are allowed for several months, which makes it impossible to know how many hotel rooms to book and a non-refundable deposit would be required asap.

Instead, the Federation will be booking a hall and putting on a screening of the meeting.  If you remember the 2015 centenary meeting, we did that in the Community Centre and made an event of it by inviting other Wis to join us.  Remember the date - 25 May, you can of course go to Cardiff if you want to be an observer, or you can watch virtually from home, or at the Federation event.

Poringland WI Newsletter August 2022

        

Dear All,

Thank goodness the temperature has dropped a little, however not enough rain even today

so we cannot stop watering our precious plants. . I have been very selective about which to water

and I’m afraid to say that some that were not in the watering regime will not

recover. The lawn is looking like a desert, but the weeds have managed to stay green.

See which plants have survived without watering, and maybe plan the garden

to be more drought resistant in anticipation of hot weather in years to come?

How is your garden surviving? Despite copious watering, our runner beans

have been very sparse. They originate in the mountainous regions of South

America and like me need a temperate climate. However the purple French

beans are coping so I think we will grow more of these in future. We have had

several punnets of strawberries &amp; blackberries, the courgettes are doing well,

but the pigeons ate all the black currants and the caterpillars decimated the

gooseberry bush while we were away so no Gooseberry fool this year. I did

get a few cherries from the little bush that I purchased last year and lots of

tomatoes, so far still green, but we live in hopes of a bumper crop.

The next Tea/coffee pm is on Wednesday 31st August 2pm at the

Octagon Barn on the Norwich road opposite the Barracks.

Our darts team won our first away match at Blofield Heath WI last week. Our

home matches are on Tuesday August 9th against Tibenham and 23 rd

against Thurton &amp; Ashby, both in the Royal Oak 7.00pm. Supporters

welcome!

MINUTES OF MEETING OF PORINGLAND W I HELD ON

WEDNESDAY 13 TH JULY 2022 AT 7.30PM.

In the Chair: Mrs Hilary Lark, Vice-President.

Hilary stated that Joan Fountain, our President, was not able to attend as she was

due to have a medical procedure at the hospital. The Meeting wished her well.

APOLOGIES: received from Joan F; Nina; Jean G; Mary; Linda D; Marietta;

Gillian; Ann W; Pat L; Jeanette.

BIRTHDAY POSIES: presented to Shirley G and Zelia.

POINTS: Hilary was pleased to present a WI spoon to Shirley Gray as she had

attained 20 points in competitions.

Hilary then welcomed our speaker, Philip Mariner who proceeded to show wonderful

photo slides of places throughout Norfolk, England, Iceland, and Greenland.

Unfortunately, we were only able to see these on his laptop as his projector was not

working. He explained how he came to take the photos and the areas travelled.

He was thanked by Hilary.

After our speaker left, and refreshments, Hilary continued with the Meeting.

MINUTES: These had been circulated in the newsletter, and were approved and

signed.

Matters Arising:

A] Darts: Our team had had 2 games - won 1, lost 1, both times 2-1. Next

match is with Tibbenham on 1st August.

CORRESPONDENCE: Lesley pointed out that Norfolk Federation was also

‘celebrating’ 70 years of owning Evelyn Suffield House, and the events to be held

are in the newsletter. Lesley said there was a ‘Make a Flower’ to ‘plant’ in the

garden for the ‘Open House Event’ to be held on 9 th September for any member to

let their imagination show! Lesley also had WI Raffle tickets to sell.

SEPTEMBER MEETING: The Speaker will be John Dixon with his talk on Adolph

Sax and the Saxophone. VOT Lesley.

Competition is a depiction of Virgo – the Maiden. Tea Hostesses Joan Porter and

Veronica. Lesley said other WIs had been invited.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS:

a] Garden Party: This is instead of a meeting in August and this will be held at

the home of Joan Porter 7 Long Road, on Wednesday 17 th August at 2.30pm.

Scones; cakes; sandwiches; etc needed and helpers on the day.

b] Federation 500 Club: Hilary was one of the winners.

Refreshments taken and raffle drawn. Competition won by Sue Cranmer.

The Walking group

We met in July at Saxlingham Nethergate playing field car park for a walk around

the village and surrounding area. We visited the ruins of the old St Mary’s church,

which is hidden in woodland to the south of the village. A service is still held there

every July. We divided several times to make longer and shorter walks, meeting up

again at the village war memorial for a little rest before ending our walk in the church

of St Mary the Virgin. There was lots of interest to see in the church including some

of the earliest stained glass in Norfolk. It was good to see all the kneelers on display

propped on the book rests. After cooling off in the church we drove around to the

Foundry Plant centre near Tasburgh for lunch. This was enjoyed by all, until the

wasps put in an appearance!

Dear All,   My Gazanias are enjoying this sunny weather and I hope you are too.  My water barrels are getting low, and the garden is begging for rain.  But the clouds just keep teasing us with Poringland Wpromises that so far have not amounted to more than a sprinkling. There are lots of events coming up locally and from the Federation, please have a look I’m sure there is something for everyone.  List overleaf and Details on the Board.

Local Events

Walking Group Tuesday 26 July meet at the Saxlingham Nethergate cricket ground car park at 11am.  There will be a choice of a longer or shorter walk.  Other members are welcome to join us for lunch at The Foundry Garden Centre, Tasburgh at 1pm.  Please let me know numbers for lunch.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF PORINGLAND WI

WEDNESDAY 8TH JUNE 2022 at 7.30pm.

In The Chair:  Mrs Hilary Lark, Vice-President.

Mrs Lark welcomed Louise Browning and Chris, who are JPs, who proceeded to talk about the work of the Magistracy.       They explained how magistrates are appointed and the guidelines they have to follow and must adhere to.     They are totally independent and, usually, 3 magistrates are on ‘the bench’ at one time, one of them is the ‘chairman’ but all 3 make the final decision.     Magistrates deal with nearly 90% of cases brought in front of them, the rest which may have to go to Crown Court.   Magistrates have authority to give a short custodial sentence depending on the crime.

VOT was given by Maureen Scott.               

After refreshments, the members said the Alberta Creed, after which Hilary welcomed Catherine Biggs as a visitor.

APOLOGIES:  received from Joan Fountain; Jeanette; Ann Webster, Veronica, and Judith.

Lesley then stated that she had received a letter from Joan explaining why she was not at the Meeting, and that she was resigning as President as she did not think she had members’ support.      It was agreed that Pam Cooper visit Joan to see if she can sort any problems out and get her to change her mind.

CORRESPONDENCE:   Lesley stated that Federation information and the Newsletter were on the notice board.      She then said we had received an invitation from Thurton & Ashby for members to attend their meeting at 2pm on 15th June. Several members said they would like to attend and car sharing was arranged.

JULY MEETING:    The Speaker is Philip Mariner and his talk is ‘Have Camera Will Travel’. VOT Liz Bussey.  Competition – Cancer the Crab.   Tea Hostesses Jean Waters and Sue Cranmer.

Competition winner was announced - Sue Cranmer.  The Raffle drawn and the meeting closed at 9.30pm..

As Secretary I receive ads and emails from various companies and one of these is Able Community Care.  Each mailing includes a Gazette with odd/interesting or useful information.  For instance did you know that margarine was invented to feed  Napolean 3’s army cheaply as butter was too expensive?  Or that Oxo cubes were invented in England in 1911 and cost 1penny.  These leaflets also include recipes.

I don’t know about you but I have a pile of recipe books and mostly I just make the same things.  I thought I had scones sorted – fruit, plain, cheese.  With extras added like sun dried tomatoes or different fruit.  This month’s recipe was for a cheese scone mix that I have not seen before and I thought you might like to try it:

RECIPE

There are 3 ingredients – 300g SR Flour, 200g grated mature cheddar, 250g plain yogurt.  Stir all together in a bowl until it forms a dough and roll out to 2cm thick.  Cut out rounds with a 6cm cutter (should make 10).  Bake at gas 6, 180° C for 18 minutes.  My oven took a bit longer and as usual I didn’t stick to this recipe, but added 1 tsp of baking powder and tsp Colman’s powdered mustard.  The 10 pin Bowling gang were my tasters and definitely approved!

The Walking group enjoyed a leisurely stroll around Bramerton in June.  As it was quite a hot day, we were pleased to be mostly in the shade.  We walked from the village hall down to the river where we rested under some shady umbrellas outside the Water’s Edge pub and waved at the boats going by.  After walking back up the hill (slowly), we adjourned to the Highway’s Nursery for lunch, where we were joined by Liz and Shirley.  Several of us then walked around the shop and garden centre – I did not enquire how much money changed hands!

a bbq, or watched it all on TV with a

glass of something refreshing.

Our stall at the local Jubilee event went

surprisingly well considering it was made

up of odds and sods,

and raised £78 for our funds.

Birthday Dinner evening.

We had a very enjoyable evening for our Birthday meeting in May, with a meal at the

City College. Congratulations to the Tutors and Students for their consideration and

efficiency. I did however complain that a garlic free meal had not been prepared for

Maureen, even though I mentioned this each time I called. Fortunately Maureen

enjoyed the fish dish that was produced at short notice.

We were lucky this year as we were able to subsidise the meal. Carol Hurren won

the last Denman Bursary that we could draw, but due to personal reasons, Covid,

and the eventual closure of Denman College, Carol was unable to take advantage of

it. Gail Mays, the previous winner was also unable to use her full allocation for

similar reasons. It was also unfortunate that Gail was unable to attend the dinner

due to Covid.

The closure of Denman made it impossible to redraw the Bursary, as we have done

in the past when the original winner has been unable to attend, the money therefore

stays in the general funds to be used as the committee sees fit for the benefit of the

members. Your Committee decided that we could afford to give each member a

discount on the Birthday dinner, we hope you all enjoyed the evening.

Walking Treasure hunt of Norwich.

Why not make a flower for the Garden ‘Project’ any size, any medium from recycled

materials to crochet. Mount it on a stick or in a small pot to be displayed in the

garden at the event.

Joan welcomed everyone to our Birthday Dinner meeting, including two brave

husbands, Keith Webster and Richard Sanders and Gill’s mother Christine.

Apologies were received from, Gail Mays, Liz Bussey and Jean Waters who were

ill and also Kate Daynes, Christine Wise, Linda Daniel and Marietta Menzies

News of Members none apart from the above.

Birthday posies were presented to Jean Gowing and Susie Hinsley, and taken on

behalf of Liz and Christine.

Business was kept to a minimum so that Members could enjoy their dinner served

efficiently by the College students.

After dinner the Birthday Draw was made. The lucky winners were Marietta,

Jeannette and Mary Stancer.

Lesley distributed to members the Norfolk Magazine and Newsletter with details of

Federation and local events.

Joan thanked the college staff for looking after us so well, and wished everyone a

safe journey home.

SCAMS and FRAUDS – avoid getting caught.

Criminals are after your cash and they are always finding new ways to dupe you.

They may pose as police officers or bank staff, or pretend to be from Microsoft or

the NHS. Or they may try Courier Fraud where they want to convince you to hand

over a sum of money to a courier who is sent to your home.

REMEMBER

 The bank or the police will never call you to ask you to verify your personal

details or PIN. If you get a call asking you to do this, hang up, wait a few

minutes and call your bank on a number you know to be genuine, such as the

one on the back of your card.

 Your bank or the police will never send a courier to your home to collect your

cash, bank cards, PINs, or any other valuable goods. Any requests to do so

are part of a scam.

 The police will not contact you out of the blue and ask you to participate in an

investigation that requires you to withdraw money from your bank, or to

purchase high value goods, such as jewellery or gold.

What to do if you’ve been a victim of fraud:

 If you have revealed your bank details over the phone or handed your card to

a courier, call your bank straight away to cancel the card.

 If you suspect that you have been a victim of courier fraud, report it to Action

Fraud by visiting actionfraud.police.uk, or by calling 0300 123 2040

If someone supposedly from Microsoft phones to say there is a problem with your

computer under no circumstances log on or do as they request. This is a scam.

Other scams include:

 Fake competitions on facebook

 Council Tax rebate scams

 Telephone cold calls claiming to be from the ‘Ministry of Justice’

.

Report any scams to the Citizens Advice consumer service website or call them on

0808 223 1133 (freephone)

Dear All,

I hope you have been enjoying the sunny weather, and your gardens are coming into bloom.

The weather forecast for the day of our walk in May was gloomy with the possibility of showers.  But fortunately that was totally wrong and the clouds soon blew away to leave a lovely blue sky.

 

Invitations

Mulbarton WI invite you to a Barn Dance in their village hall, The Common NR14 8AE on Monday 16 May 7.30 – 9.45 £8 inc refreshments.

Long Stratton WI invite 4 members to their meeting on Wed 18 May 7.30pm in their village hall to hear Jane Hoggar, ‘Life as a Bluebell Girl’.

Local Events

Next Walk Tuesday 21 June meet at the Village Hall Bramerton.  Lunch at Highway nursery at 1pm, non-walking members welcome to join us.

The next Tea/coffee pm is on Wednesday 25th May 2pm at the Octagon Barn on the Norwich road opposite the Barracks.

Our darts team are gearing up for this year’s tournament – watch out next month for match dates so that you can come along to support us at the Oak.

You are also welcome to come and have a go - all abilities welcome.  Next practise session Tuesday evening 24 May.

PORINGLAND WI MINUTES OF MEETING HELD ON WEDNEDAY 13TH APRIL 2022 AT 7.30PM.

In the Chair:  Mrs Joan Fountain, President

The Meeting began with the singing of Jerusalem and the President then welcomed Isabel as a visitor and Gillian as a new Member.

APOLOGIES:  from Liz; Christine; Jeanette; Sue H;  Carol; Pam C; Marietta; Judith; Alison.

NEWS OF MEMBERS:   The President was pleased to see Jean Gowing and Shirley Gray back.

BIRTHDAY POSIES:  presented to Joan and as Alison was not present a member offered to take it to her.

MINUTES:  were approved and signed as correct.

Matters Arising:

A] FAM Meeting:  Those that attended had found it informative and enjoyable.

B] Birthday Certificate:   A 100th Birthday Certificate was presented to us and this was  displayed for members to see.

CORRESPONDENCE:     Norfolk Federation What’s on is displayed on notice board, together with newsletter information.        Lesley then stated that the Resolution regarding ‘Attention Deficient’is being  forwarded to go to the AGM.  Members voted in favour of this resolution.

MAY 11TH: We do not have our usual meeting as this is our Birthday Dinner, which we are this year holding at the City College to arrive 6pm for 6.30pm and to go to Gate 5 where there is ample car parking space.  She has been told the menu will be available after Easter.       

JUNE MEETING:  The speaker is Mrs Andrea Elsdon who will talk on ‘The Work of the Magistracy’.   VOT  Maureen Scott.  Competition Gemini- The Twins.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS:

A] Village Fete:   Members are reminded we are running a ‘Norfolk Scone Baking Competition’ on  4th June.    The competition is open to anyone in the village and the judge will be from outside.     Entry forms are available if any of our members wish to enter.

The President also asked if members would like to decorate their front gardens  in red, 

white and blue, to mark the Jubilee. (Lesley has recipe of Norfolk Scone )

B] Silver Salver Competition:   Our entry was displayed and Lesley stated we again came 5th out of 18 entries. 

C} Car Boot Sale:   Our stall made £30.00.

The President then welcomed Liz Fox who gave a most delightful and informative talk on how to make a beautiful garden easily. She illustrated this and gave the ‘English’ names for plants and not ‘Latin’ and also stated when and how to plant seeds or cuttings. She was thanked by Jean Waters.

Competition was judged and was won by Sue Cranmer.      Refreshments were then taken and the raffle drawn.

Meeting closed 9.20pm.

May Walking group report

Our May walk took us around High Ash farm, starting from the corner of Chandler road and Wash lane where the coffee van parks.  We walked down the hill and took a minute to check out the green man (pictured) and the site where our little oak trees have been planted.  We couldn’t spot any, but hopefully they will soon sprout above the grass.  We then walked up the hill to visit Fox’s Grove and the bluebells.  They were a truly magnificent purple carpet, well worth a visit if you get the chance another year.  We then followed the path down to Caistor lane where we were treated to the sight of 2 roe deer silhouetted against the sky line.  Here we divided into 2 groups one heading back by a shorter route past High Ash farm, and the second taking a longer route across the fields towards Arminghall. 

After our exertions, we treated ourselves to lunch at the White Horse in Trowse.  We can highly recommend their roast of the day if you need filling up!

You are welcome to join us – in June when we shall meet on Tuesday 21st at the village hall in Bramerton at 11am.  We cater for various abilities usually with a choice of long or shorter walks.  But if you feel that is still too much, why not meet us for lunch at Highway Nursery at 1pm.
