Cold Calling Alert
Norfolk Trading Standards are reminding residents to be on their guard to doorstep cold calling. They are asking us to report all doorstep cold calling incidents to them, especially if displaying a No Cold Calling sticker. They also offer the following advice:
- It is your doorstep, you decide whether to answer the door or not, if you can, check through a window or spy hole to see who is there.
- Make sure other doors are locked before answering the front door.
- If they are offering services or to sell something, politely but confidently say you are not interested and close the door.
- If they claim to represent an authority, organisation or charity, ask to see ID. If it is offered, ask if you can take it to check its validity. If you are given the ID, then close the door and contact the company (but not on the info given on the ID as it could be fake.)
- If no ID is offered or they refuse to let you check it, so you cannot verify if it is genuine, politely but confidently say you are not interested and close the door.
- As the cold caller leaves, if you can safely watch from indoors, see if they call at other houses, return to a vehicle with signage (can you see make/model/colour/registration) are they alone or with others? Note down description of caller and the other information and report this via the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on freephone 0808 223 1133 or to Norfolk Constabulary on 101. If you feel threatened or have concerns for vulnerable neighbours, always call 999.
First Quiz of the year – you may have heard this on the Garden Party on Radio Norfolk last Saturday, but can you remember the answers. If you didn’t hear it, or cannot remember, can you tell if they’re Dickens or Chickens?? Here are 12 names and you have to decide are they a character from Dickens or a breed of Chicken?

Resolutions for 2023 AGM
- Save our water – Every drop matters! As global temperatures rise, there is a risk drought will become more frequent in the UK. This will place increasing strains on the UK’s water supply and endanger our natural world. The NFWI calls on government and water companies to develop robust plans that would ensure the UK’s long-term water security, including addressing water leakage from pipes. The NFWI calls on WI members to take immediate actions to value and conserve water.
- Women to women – turning over a new leaf in the lives of women tea workers. While in the UK we enjoy our daily cuppa, the mostly women tea workers who produce our tea struggle to access living wages, decent housing, sanitation or education for their children due to the low prices paid to producers for tea. The NFWI calls on UK tea companies and retailers to take action to fix the broken tea buying system to enable plantation owners to give women tea pluckers a fair deal so they can live the healthy and prosperous family life they deserve.
- Online gambling harm: time for action. Online gambling has substantially increased resulting in a growing number of people being exposed to the risks of gambling-related harms. Current legislation is inadequate in addressing the harms caused by problem gambling and in providing protections to those affected. This resolution calls on decisionmakers to introduce updated legislation and regulation to address these issues, and for increased support to be made available to those affected by problem gambling, particularly women and children.
- Clean rivers for people and wildlife. Water quality in our river is shameful. Legally, designated bathing waters must be regularly monitored for pollution. The NFWI urges its members, the wider public, local authorities and Government to make, support and promote applications for official designated bathing sites on appropriate stretches of rivers in their area. This will be instrumental to the clean up of rivers as it has been for water quality improvement at coastal beaches.
At the January meeting you will be asked to vote for the one you prefer. If you are not at the meeting and wish to vote, there was a form in the December WI Life you could fill in, or let Lesley know your choice if that magazine is in the bin!
