Poringland WI Newsletter October 2022

Poringland WI Newsletter October 2022

Dear All,

After all the drama, the pageantry, the tears and the flowers, we find ourselves in a Kingdom with a new King.  The next big event will be the Coronation, this time a chance for street parties and some fun.  Let’s hope the weather will be kinder than in 1952 or the day of our garden party.  We were damp but not down-hearted!

Centenary Salver Competition

Calling all members can you help us with this? We need ideas people for a display on the theme ‘A Country’, and members who can make one item from the following: A Fresh floral exhibit; 3 Bread rolls; an item of pewter; a framed piece of hand embroidery that exhibits a variety of stitches; a jar of jam; an item of crochet; a greetings card; 5 small fancy cakes; a photograph.

I’m sure lots of you have hidden talents and we don’t need all of those items but the ones we opt for will be in keeping with the chosen Country.  We have all winter to plan and make these as the exhibition will not be until 14th April 2023.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF PORINGLAND W I  HELD ON

WEDNESDAY 14TH September 2022 AT 7.30PM.

In the Chair:   Mrs Joan Fountain, President

The meeting began with a minute’s silence in memory of Queen Elizabeth II.

Members then sang Jerusalem.

APOLOGIES: from Christine Wise, Judith and Marietta.

VISITORS: The President was pleased to welcome Daphne Howlett; Catherine Bigg; Ann Wilcox, and Bridget Durrant was welcomed back.

NEWS:   The President stated that although Pam Lack was not a present member she had been for years, and explained that Pam had had a stroke whilst in Spain but, thankfully, was recovering and due home at the end of September.

BIRTHDAY POSIES: presented to Veronica and Lesley.

NEWS FROM NORFOLK WI:   Lesley stated that an invitation for a member of Norfolk WI to attend that State Funeral of HM The Queen had been received and so the WI will be represented at this event.

MINUTES;  for June and July, having been circulated in the newsletter were signed.

The President then welcomed John Dixon to talk about the life of Adolph Sax and the Saxophone.

He began by giving the life of Adolph Sax who became a musical virtuoso at the age of 16 years and by 21 years was ‘improving’ the clarinet and ‘inventing’ what would be considered ‘modern’ musical instruments today.  Unfortunately the members of the music guild did not like this and made life very difficult, but Adolph Sax has the saxophone named after him.  John had brought with him 6 different saxophones and demonstrated each.  He was then joined by his two daughters, a flautist and a bassoonist, who proceeded to entertain us with some tunes.  These were well received by our members.  He was thanked by Lesley Sanders.  After refreshments, John and his daughters left the meeting.

The President then continued with the meeting.

POINTS: The President was pleased to present a WI cup and saucer to Sue Cranmer as Sue had attained 30 points in competitions.

GARDEN PARTY:  Joan thanked all who attended and especially Joan Porter for hosting the garden party and Sue Cranmer who had worked so hard in the kitchen.

SURVEY:  The President explained that members were interested in ‘workshops’ but the event could not be subsidised by the WI unless it was ‘educational’.

Outings were suggested and Joan stated she had enquired about a trip to Holkham Hall for their Christmas decorations.   The cost would be £28.00 each, and the cost of a 33-seater coach  (provided it was full) was £12.00 each person, so £40.00 in all.  Not enough members were interested.

OCTOBER MEETING:   The subject will be ‘The Work of The Red Cross’.   VOT Suzie Hinsley.  Competition is Libra – the Scales.   Tea hostesses Jeanette and Pat.

Competition was won by Mary Stancer and the raffle drawn.

The Meeting ended with the singing of the National Anthem at 9.35pm.

The Walking group and the Convoy

It was a dry day for our walk in September and just the right temperature for walking.  On the way Jeanette had an adventure trying to find Pulham and we all faced a long queue of traffic through Long Stratton.  However, everyone enjoyed the 2 mile walk which began in Pulham Market by the Green, went along lanes and footpaths and ended with a look around the church.  We decided to find our way to Goodies for lunch without going out onto the A140, which went fine.  We enjoyed a lovely lunch and did a bit of shopping in their food department – they have some yummy stuff in there.  Problems began when we decided to come home via the back roads.  First, we were in convoy behind Liz, who somehow managed to take us back into Pulham.  We all reversed so we were then following Zelia, who led us back out onto the main road.  While she pootled back through Long Stratton, the rest of us turned back passed Goodies again in an effort to find the road to Hempnall.  This time we were in the lead and missed the turn again and very nearly ended up back in Pulham for a second time.  By this time I was in hysterics and could hardly stand when I got out to tell everyone we had to turn round again.  Once more we reversed, this time following Jeanette.  After a few nervous junctions where we were unsure of the road to take – a distinct lack of signage on the back roads!  We finally made it home.  We certainly all had our fix of medicinal laughter that day.
