Federation Holiday in Shakespeare Country Sunday 23 to Friday 27 April 2023. Staying at the Mercure Walton Hotel in Stratford on Avon. Visits included to Royal Leamington Spa, Warwick Castle, Shakespeare’s birthplace, Ann Hathaway cottage and free time in Stratford. Details on the Board. Places still available.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF PORINGLAND WI
held on Wednesday 12 October 2022

Joan welcomed everyone to the meeting, and introduced the speaker, Mr Paul ? who then gave his talk on the work of the Red Cross. He was very informative and we learned some things we were unaware of. He was thanked by Susie Hinsley.
After refreshments, we continued with the meeting.

Matters Arising.
A board was passed around with dates for pot painting sessions, and members were reminded of the singalong session on 27 October.

Nfk Mag. Was distributed and taken for absent friends, and members were reminded to see Notice Board for Federation information.
Invitation to Rockland St Mary on 8 Nov. to see Lynton Johnson’s floral demonstration. 6 members would like to attend.
November Meeting
Card making with Margaret Collingwood. The Committee have agreed to pay for the materials for 1 card at this workshop as part of our Denman Bursary alternative. Thanks will be by Susie Hinsley
Competition: Depiction of Scorpio. Tea Hostesses – Maureen Scott and a volunteer.
AOB as we were giving out the last notices, 2 young men walked in, we asked them to sit, and they stayed for the rest of the meeting, even buying Raffle tickets. It did make us realise that we are vulnerable in the Centre when there are no other people around.
Lesley explained about the Salvation Army homeless project and members agreed that they would like to support this with toiletry items and knitted garments. Theatre visit to see Kinky Boots, there were no further takers. Lesley asked if anyone would like to join the gym group – no response. Joan told members that she had attended the opening of the Men’s Shed in the Footpath, and explained about our tree and the plaque repair. Members were invited to the replacing of the plaque on Saturday 5 Nov at 10.30am.

Resolutions for 2023 AGM
1 Save our water – Every drop matters! Calling on the govt and water companies to develop robust plans to ensure long term water security in view of climate change increasing drought risk.
2 Women to women – turning over a new leaf in the lives of women tea workers. Calling on tea companies and retailers to ensure the tea pluckers get a fair deal to enjoy a healthy and prosperous family life they deserve.
3 Online gambling harm: time for action. To increase support to those affected, particularly women and children.
4 Clean rivers for people and wildlife. Improve the water quality as with beaches.
The one we favour to be voted for at January meeting. If you want to know more, there is an information meeting in the House on Tuesday 29 November 10.30 – 12.30. Cost £6, free if you are prepared to tell us what you learned!
The Walking group – the saga continues:
Our walk in October, took place on another lovely sunny day. We met up at the Cellar House in Eaton and no-one got lost or stuck in traffic. All well and good! Richard and I had checked out the walk on the previous Sunday walking over the bridge into Cringleford and across the playing field to the Keswick road. Detouring passed Keswick hall, and the village that is built there. Then down to the rather pretty mill, over the river, over the railway line, up the lane passed the Eaton Vale Centre and onto Church road in Eaton and back to the pub. However we decided that this (3.6miles) was probably a bit too far for some of our walkers, so we reversed the walk, thinking that those with problems could cut out the section to Keswick hall.
We set off along Church Road, happily dividing into chatting groups. I ensured that the leading group turned down the lane towards the railway line. I could see the next group further back and thought they had seen which way we went but obviously not as when we reached the railway crossing there was no sign of them. After about 20 minutes I phoned one of the group, who said we wondered where you had gone and we’re now coming back, but it took another 15 minutes for them to arrive, by which time it was getting late to fit in the whole walk, so some turned back and the rest of us did the shorter version of the walk.
We met up back at the Cellar House, along with Liz and Shirley for a leisurely lunch. My excuse for losing the group - I was distracted by hearing that our long awaited Balloon flight was to take place that afternoon, but I promise in future to always ensure the back markers know which way to go! What can possibly go wrong next month??
