Welcome to Autumn – It is now official! The season of mists and mellow

fruitfulness is upon us and if you have a glut of anything eg tomatoes or

apples? I have some spare jam jars if you need any.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF PORINGLAND W I

HELD ON WEDNESDAY 13 TH SEPTEMBER 2023 AT 7.30PM.

In the Chair: Mrs Joan Fountain, President

The Meeting began with the singing of Jerusalem.

APOLOGIES: From Judith; Gillian; Janet; Joan P; Pam C; Mary, Veronica.

NEWS OF MEMBERS: Judith has had her operation and the members wished her

a speedy recovery.

BIRTHDAY POSIES: presented to Lesley and one to be taken for Veronica.

POINTS: The President told the meeting that Sue Cranmer had attained 30 points

and was pleased to present her with a pot plant. Joan then explained the points

system and as there were now no WI cups and saucers or spoons available, with

immediate effect, anyone reaching 25 points will get a gift.

MINUTES: were approved and signed.

Matters Arising:

A] Garden Party: Everyone enjoyed this event and £75.45 was raised.

B] Quiz: This is on 29 th September at Community Centre - helpers needed; or 4

members to make up a team. Those interested to let Lesley know.

C] Questionnaire: Members were asked to complete the questionnaire enclosed

in the newsletter regarding meeting times.

D] NFWI Raffle: Lesley had tickets available.

MAGAZINE: had been distributed to members.

NEWSLETTER: Federation ‘What’s On’ is in the newsletter, and the Federation

Autumn Meeting at County Hall on 16 th October; Cost is £7.50. Details of invitations

received in newsletter.

OCTOBER MEETING: Our Speaker will be Jonathan Casey and his subject

Basket Making. VOT is to be given by Susie Hinsley and tea hostesses Pat and

Jeanette. Competition is ‘A Small Woven Item.

The President then welcomed Maria Pennington who gave a most interesting and

enjoyable talk with lovely photos of jewellery through the ages. She illustrated

various ‘styles’ and stated that the styles from thousands of years ago ‘return’ time

and time again. She was thanked by Hilary Lark.

Competition was won by Sue C; second was Lesley. Refreshments taken and

raffle drawn. Meeting closed 9.30pm.

Centenary Salver. Would you like to help with our entry this year? We need

crafters, bakers, flower arrangers, ideas people in fact just about anyone! The

theme this year is a ‘Day to Remember’. It could be a WI day, a special

birthday, a trip to the seaside etc as long as we can make up a display and

incorporate 5 of the following items:

1 a fresh floral display,

2 three sausage rolls with shortcrust pastry,

3 an item of patchwork,

4 a watercolour painting,

5 a jar of citrus marmalade

6 an item of hand knitting

7 5 fancy biscuits

8 an item of needle felting

9 a photograph

Are you any good at any of these? Do you have a special day in mind?

There is also an individual competition for crafty members: Make a

cushion using any suitable medium. Anyone can enter, see schedule for

details, £2 per entry.

Fundraising Ideas wanted.

We all know that costs are rising and hall costs and speakers are charging

more. Did you know that it now takes the annual subs that we receive (£22.60

each) from 4 or 5 members to pay for one WI evening with a speaker? With

30 members that only covers half the meetings in a year. We therefore need

to raise money from somewhere to cover the other meetings. The garden

party helped thanks to you, but we still need more, preferably from other

people! Do you have any ideas?

It is unfortunate that we had to cancel our proposed Quiz evening, but if

people don’t want to come, we cannot force them. With the numbers booked

we would only have broken even, and once we discovered that we did not

have to pay to cancel the hall, we decided it was not worth the effort.

We are however going ahead with our plan to sell items which our craft group

have been making. These include small knitted and crochet items, soft toys,

Christmas baubles, beaded jewellery and more.

The first sale will be at the crafter’s day in the Community centre on Saturday

21 st October. Please let us know if you are willing to help on the stall for an hour or two.

Hi Everyone. We would like to thank all who brought cakes etc to the garden

party and to everyone who attended. We were fortunate with the weather this

year, and between us raised a total of £75.45 towards WI funds, which will

help with the cost of speakers. Our next fundraising event is the Quiz night on

Friday 29 September, we hope that you will all be able to support us either

with nibble donations or help on the night. See Board for the help needed.

Please complete the questionnaire about meeting times which is enclosed with

this Newsletter and place in box on front table, or hand to a committee

member. We need everyone’s view, so please return it asap thank you.

basic training 10 – 1pm, Intermediate/Advanced. 1.30 – 4.30pm. £7.50 per

session. Understanding some of the common first aid medical situations that

older adults face can help you prepare for possible emergencies. Eg Falls,

cuts & scrapes, Cardiovascular problems, heat/cold related illness.

As Lesley Sanders, the Secretary, was away, Maureen Scott offered to act as

Secretary for the Meeting to which the meeting approved.

The Meeting then began with the singing of Jerusalem.

The President told the meeting that our speaker was not able to attend as her son

was ill.

APOLOGIES: received from Lesley; Marietta; Jean W; Ann Webster.

NEWS OF MEMBERS: Unfortunately, Jean Waters was still unwell and it was

hoped she would soon get better. The meeting was pleased to see Hilary back

and looking well.

BIRTHDAY POSIES: were then presented to Zelia and Shirley Gray.

MINUTES: of the May Meeting were approved and signed.

Matters Arising:

A] Dinner: It was agreed that for 2024 another venue would be booked.

B] Walk: The walk was enjoyable, despite the rain. The next walk is 15 th August.

Lunch at 1pm. Location to be arranged.

MAGAZINE AND CORRESPONDENCE: Magazine distributed and members

asked to take and deliver a copy to any absentee. Joan mentioned our

forthcoming events and pointed out that those and proposed events by Federation

were in newsletter.

SEPTEMBER MEETING: The speaker is Maria Pennington and her subject is

‘Jewellery Through The Ages’. The tea hostesses are Judith Finn and Gail Mays.

The competition is ‘A Handmade Item of Jewellery’.

Joan reminded members that as there is no meeting in August, we normally hold a

Garden Party at a member’s home. Joan Porter offered her home at Long Road,

and the date agreed is Wednesday 16 th August 2pm. Helpers would be needed and

members were asked if they could bring refreshments, etc.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS:

A] Diaries: Hilary stated that she had to order diaries and calendars so if anyone

wants any could they let her know as soon as possible.

B] Bowling: The next session 28 th July.

C] Craft Group: Next meeting at Joan’s house 24 th July.

D] Darts: Matches at ‘The Oak’ on 1 st and 8 th August, both start at 7pm.

E] Singalong: at Pam Lack’s. The date and time to be arranged.

F] Scrabble: Next session at ‘The Feathers’ 21 st July.

G] Tea Afternoon: At Octagon Barn 26 th July.

H] Quiz: to be held at community Centre 29 th September, other WIs have been

invited to enter teams of four: £7 per person.

As we did not have a speaker, we had a ‘Word Search’ competition. How many

words (minimum 3 letters) from the given word ‘Celebration’. This was won by

Maureen Scott with 82 words.

Refreshments taken and competition won by Sue Cranmer. Joan Porter and Mary

Stancer runners-up. Raffle then drawn and meeting closed at 9.15pm.

Denman College update.

As many of you know, our lovely College in Oxford was sold in 2021 for £6.75

million. I have been asked to share with you a letter from National regarding their

proposals for how they will use the money. It has now been approved by the Charity

Commission that £2.75million can be used to setup a new educational model which

will be called ‘The WI Learning Hub’. There will be free online Educational courses

plus the Denman at Home will continue as now. There are some interesting

courses, workshops and talks on there if you have never looked at it.

In addition the interest on the remaining £4million will be used to support in-person

education around the country by offering grants to Federations along with expertise

and support, to enable us to put on events locally. The aim is for members to have

access to educational events without incurring significant expense.

Otherwise, we wait and see how this pans out in reality.

Macmillan Fundraising Event Friday 29 September at the Royal Oak 12 noon

onwards. Zelia would appreciate donations of nibbles/savouries/cup cakes etc and

welcome anyone wishing to support this event.

Poringland WI Newsletter August 2023

Hello everyone, I hope you are keeping well. Last month I wished for a little

more rain – I shall now stop interfering with the weather and take what comes

quietly. Even if when out walking we get as wet as we did at Winterton, and

even wetter when I was visiting my brother in Yorkshire. Obviously, rain is

more wetting up that way, clothes needed tumble drying and shoes could have

done with same after paddling through the puddles.

Are you a snapper? Do you go around taking pictures of views that you like

the look of and then leave them in your phone or other device? Why not print

some off and send them into the calendar 2025 competition?

Each year, the Federation produces a calendar of Norfolk pictures taken by

members. There is usually a theme, this year’s was Heritage Norfolk, next

year (already printed) is flowers and fungi. For 2025 the theme is colourful

Norfolk and if your photo is printed you get a free calendar!

Duxford Autumn Quilt Festival Friday 1 st September. Displays, supplies for

sale, demonstrations. Cost £25 under 60, £24 over 60. Or £19 coach fare

only, if you wish to visit the Duxford Imperial Museum.

Evelyn Suffield House – open day Friday 8 September 11 – 4pm. Includes

Walking treasure hunt £3 per team.

CRAFT DAY at New Buckenham on Friday 15 September 10am – 3.30pm

£30 including light lunch of jacket potato followed by fruit crumble or fruit salad.

Crafts include: Plastic canvas treasure box, rag rugging, Parchment craft,

decorated candle and matching box, mini-envelope album/journal.

THE NATIONAL AGM 2024

We watched the National AGM on Zoom at New Buckenham this year as the

Federation did not take any coaches to Cardiff. But next year the meeting will be

back in the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Office are thinking of coaches and

hotels again. They would like expressions of interest to see how many members

would like to go in person. There is no commitment, but if you think you might like to

attend, please contact Helen in the office on admin@norfolkwi.org.uk or phone her

on 01603 624580

Would you like to join our walking group? We meet once each month on

the third Tuesday and the walk is followed by lunch in a local hostelry. Our

walks are usually divided into shorter and longer lengths to cover differing

abilities. If you don’t wish to walk, like several members already, you can join

us for lunch. See notification of next date in upcoming local events.

Would you like to help the Federation and have a little flutter? If so why not

join the 500 club? For £5 per share you will be entered into a draw every

month for a year with a chance to win one of 3 cash prizes each month.

Entries must be in by 31 October.

Hello everyone, I am writing this at midsummer and feeling rather hot, I

hope July’s weather is just right for you, and we have had a little more

rain for the gardens.

Crafts include: Plastic canvas treasure box, rag rugging, Parchment craft,

decorated candle and matching box, mini-envelope album/journal.

Strictly Fit Steps with light afternoon tea. At Thompson Village Hall IP24

1PY. Friday 22 September 10.30 – 2pm. Doors open 10am for tea/coffee

cost £15. A ballroom and latin dance fitness class that is strictly for fun no

partner needed.

LADIES THAT LUNCH on first Friday starting from 1 st Sept. 2 course lunch for

£12. Single applicants only as spaces are limited. The first menu is warm

chicken and bacon salad with new potatoes followed by sticky toffee pudding.

Veggie option available. See board for further menus.

And finally a competition for any card makers – Design a Christmas card

for the Norfolk WI. £2 per entry see board for further details. Winning card will

be reproduced and sold on behalf of the Federation. Entries in by 1 st August.

MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF PORINGLAND W.I.

HELD ON WEDNESDAY 14TH JUNE 2023 AT 7.30PM.

In the Chair: Mrs Joan Fountain, President

The President welcomed everyone to the meeting and then introduced our speaker,

Mr Mark Johnstone who gave a most interesting talk on 'Hear for Norfolk', an

explanation of how deafness can affect the life not only for deaf persons but for

those around them. ‘Hear for Norfolk’ is a charity that helps by providing hearing

tests; advice as to the appropriate hearing aids; and the aids. He also pointed out

that we live in a 'noisy world' which affects the ears and which could cause deafness

and thus prevent communication and interaction between people.

He was thanked by Catherine Biggs, followed by a break for refreshments.

The President then continued with the Meeting see next page:

NEWS OF MEMBERS: Hilary was now recovering from her operation; Mary,

unfortunately, has Covid; Jean W was still unwell. The members wished them well.

BIRTHDAY POSIES: were given out to those members who had a birthday in May

and June.

MINUTES OF APRIL MEETING: were approved and signed.

Matters Arising:

a] Dinner: Those that attended said they had enjoyed the evening, but thought it

was time to change the venue for 2024.

b] FAM Meeting: Joan gave a report on the Norfolk Federation Meeting. She

said 5 Trustees had retired and new Trustees have been appointed. She informed

the meeting that the morning speaker was Trading Standards Officer Stephen

Maunder who updated us on scams and how to avoid being caught out. The

afternoon speaker was Esme Young of the BBC Sewing Bee Programme, who told

us of her unusual life, and Fashion business called Swanky Modes.

c] National AGM: Lesley reported that the Resolution regarding river water was

passed even though a speaker gave very good reasons against it: It was pointed

out that as WIs had already voted for the Resolution, in most cases their vote could

not be changed. She did say that the 2024 AGM will be held in London.

MAGAZINE AND FEDERATION INFORMATION: magazine had been distributed

and all information was on the noticeboard and in the Newsletter.

JULY MEETING: Frances Mobbs will be giving a Cookery Demonstration and VOT

will be given by Gail Mays. Competition is '6 homemade biscuits (not cakes) and

the tea hostesses Mary Stancer & Linda Daniels.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS:

a] Walk: will be on 20th June at Winterton names were taken.

b] Theatre Royal: Lesley stated that the comedy 'Pride and Prejudice (Austen

Style!') was on and tickets were being offered at £25.00 for any part of the theatre.

Several members would like to attend, Lesley will purchase tickets for next

Wednesday performance.

Competition was won by Sue Cranmer and the raffle drawn. Meeting closed at

9.25pm.

Our June Walk at Winterton, proved that we cannot always be lucky with the

weather. We chose the one wet day this week, and did we get WET ! The rain

came on as we were walking north along the beach. A mild wind from the south

ensured that we got soaked down our backs and trousers. When we had enough of

the beach, we turned to walk back through the dunes – a lovely area normally – and

got wet down our fronts. Fortunately some of us had the forethought to take spare

trousers, but someone had to sit on a towel.

Those on the short walk had time for a coffee in the shelter, while we hardy few saw

lots of seals eyeing us from the water, little terns flitting up the beach, and heard

larks serenading us over the dunes. We were certainly ready for our lunch.

How to spot scam messages or calls

 Authority 

Is the message claiming to be from someone official? For example, your bank,

doctor, a solicitor, or a government department. 

Criminals often pretend to be important people or organisations to trick you into

doing what they want 

• Urgency 

Are you told you have a limited time to respond (such as 'within 24 hours' or

‘immediately’)?  

Criminals often threaten you with fines or other negative consequences 

• Emotion 

Does the message make you panic, fearful, hopeful or curious?  

Criminals often use threatening language, make false claims of support, or tease

you into wanting to find out more 

• Scarcity 

Is the message offering something in short supply, like concert tickets, money or a

cure for medical conditions? 

Fear of missing out on a good deal or opportunity can make you respond quickly  

• Current Events 

Are you expecting to see a message like this? Criminals often exploit current

news stories, big events or specific times of year (like tax reporting) to make their

scam seem more relevant to you.

Remember:  STOP. CHALLENGE. PROTECT

Never deal with doorstep cold callers if they are offering for

example:

• Roofs • Trees & Gardens • Driveways • Cleaning & Household Products • Solar

Hello Everyone Summer is upon us at last, and it was quite a warm evening last night for the first of two Federation Garden Parties at Peter Beales roses.  A pleasant evening with a tour of the garden and guide to grafting roses thrown in.  What a lot of work goes into producing those lovely blooms.  No wonder they won another gold medal at Chelsea this year. We last visited in 2012, is it time for another trip?

Next Walk of Tuesday 20 June.  Meet at Winterton on Sea cliff top car park  at 11am. Lunch 1pm at the Fisherman’s Return on The Lane NR29 4BN.  Members who would like to join for the walk and/or lunch, please let Lesley know for lunch numbers.

GYM Sessions every Thursday afternoon in term time, another mad woman required to join the usual mob.  Exercises tailored to your needs/health/fitness.  Speak to Lesley if you are interested.

Darts – we usually meet at the Oak on 2nd and 4th Tuesday afternoon. We have 2 matches in June.  We play away to Thurton A team on Monday evening 19th at the George and Dragon, and at home in the Royal Oak on Tuesday 27th to Thurlton team.  We would love to have some supporters.   

The next Tea/coffee pm is on Wednesday 28 June 2pm at the Octagon Barn on the Norwich Road.  Join us for a chat and a cuppa.

Events of the month.

 May began with our Birthday dinner, enjoyed by 26 members plus 3 husbands at the Debut restaurant. The meal was a tasting menu, so lots of small dishes. Some more successful than others.  Of course, depending on your views, the most important event in May was the Coronation of Charles III.  We wish him better luck than his 2 predecessors with that title!  As usual it rained on the day – well it rained 70 years ago too – does that count as ‘as usual’?

Our walk on the 16th was sunny and warm, but not without incident as our car refused to start – flat battery, so Richard who was to be leader of the short walk did not make it.  Thankfully Veronica and I were given a lift by Sue France.  The 2 routes were slightly rearranged, as I was the only leader. We all walked together through the woods behind Bergh Apton church where the bluebells were just going over for the season.  As well as the bluebells, it is a lovely place to see drifts of snowdrops in February or March.  

The slower walkers then went around the ex landfill site which is now left to nature.  Welcoming seats are provided at the far end where the sculpture of the dancing figures and a tree to commemorate a Jubilee are situated.  Three intrepid walkers did a longer walk around the village and we all met up as usual in the church before driving back to Green Pastures and meeting up with yet more members, so a total of about 14 enjoyed lunch together. 

Several members attended the Federation Annual Meeting in the Theatre Royal.  This was my last meeting as a member of the Board of Trustees, so if you missed my stage appearance that was your last chance!  The afternoon speaker, Esme Young of the Great British Sewing Bee, was very good.  If you look at her now, you could not imagine the sort of life she led when she was an art student in the late sixties.  She joined with 3 other female students to start a dress designing company called Swanky Modes.  Designs included dresses made from see through plastic shower curtains!

4 of us attended the meeting at New Buckenham to see the National AGM on zoom.  After a dodgy start with the techy stuff we managed to do our voting and the resolution on clean rivers was passed, although I had some reservations after hearing what one of the speakers had to say on the subject.

 Poringland WI Newsletter May 2023

Hello Everyone This was our entry for the Centenary Salver competition.   We came 8th out of 15 overall, which we did not consider a bad result considering the standard of the entries this year. Countries from around the world were depicted – from Australia to Brazil via Kenya and America.  There were several Welsh Dragons and some Scottish Tartan.

  A big thank you to everyone who helped with this entry in whatever way.

MINUTES OF MEETING OF PORINGLAND WI

WEDNESDAY 12TH APRIL 2023 AT 7.30PM.

Hilary welcomed Janet Gudgen as a new member and Sylvia Vines as a visitor.

NEWS OF MEMBERS:  Mary was recovering from an operation; Liz and Jean were unwell.   

BIRTHDAY POSIES:   As Joan was away her birthday posy will be given to her on her return.

Hilary then welcomed John Henson who gave his talk entitled ‘Sweetness & Light, Sex & Violence, which he quickly explained referred to bees and honey!    He disproved myths relating to honey eg: honey is 80% sugar and not suitable for diabetics.   He also pointed out that bees only sting as a defence unlike wasps.  He was thanked by Nina.

Refreshments taken and then the Meeting continued.

Matters Arising:

Dinner:   Members were reminded the Birthday Dinner was at Debut Restaurant on Wednesday 3rd May this replaces the 12 May Meeting.

AGM:  The National AGM is 25th May and will be ‘streamed’ at Old Buckenham Village Hall. As Joan and Lesley are delegates they will be going but have 2 spaces in the car if any Members are interested.

Resolution:   The selected Resolution for this year’s AGM is for Clean Rivers for People and Wildlife.

We have to vote if we approve or not.    Members voted for this Resolution.

Vice-President: As Hilary is having an operation on 25th April and will not be able to attend meetings for 2 months, Rosemary will deal with financial matters.

Competition was won by Sue Cranmer and the raffle drawn.

Some Events we enjoyed in April.

We had a busy week from 17 April, Monday was our craft afternoon, when half a dozen of us sat in Joan’s pleasant sun room, and chatted over our various knitting and crochet projects.

On Tuesday 5 members enjoyed walks at Wreningham.  The 2 walks joined up at the church where we managed to gain entry, once we realised the door was stiff, not locked.  We were joined by 5 more members for lunch at the Bird in Hand.  The meals were fine, but the service was rather slow.

On Wednesday 12 members spent an evening at the Hotter shop in Norwich, where we heard about the company and enjoyed nibbles while watching a fashion show of the new season’s styles.  After having our feet measured, most of us were tempted to purchase shoes or sandals for the summer and were rewarded with a free gift of a small handbag.  To round off the evening there was a free draw for a voucher for another pair of shoes, which was won by Susie.

Finally, we held our scrabble day at the Feathers on the Thursday.  This is proving very popular and a record number attended with 16 making up 4 tables playing and  lunching together. Some of us even went to the gym after that!
